Park Report: June 2, 2010

Remember a while back I told you that I wouldn't lie to you about what it's like in the Park? Well, the truth this week is that it's wet, muddy and a bit on the cold side. There are small pools of water here and there but the riding is still quite good. During the gaps in the weather systems the surface water soaks into the dirt and the riding becomes tacky and fantastic. The crowds are gone and the people riding are getting in max laps and having a good time. The moisture has enabled the line in Double Vision to get compacted and the GS is now running great.

Yesterday I even saw some dude backflip one of the jumps on a big bike! Cowan is almost finished with the Boneyard build and the hut tub, catcher's mitt and pyramid are all lined up and in place in the bottom third of the course. I can't wait until the line gets buffed in to see the first sessions take place on these new school features. I want to see someone downside tail whip on - hard way tail whip off that catchers mitt after looping the hot tub and tossing a sweet shoulder buzz off the apex of the pyramid - game on.

The trail crew have been working on two fronts, the main crew built a new entrance into Upper Angry Pirate so we can do the right thing and decommission the boggy section at the top of the ski run. The new single track is much more in line with our environmental practices and the flavor of the trail. We can now fix the ski run and get some grass growing to stabilize the soil. The other boys have actually been up at the top of Garbanzo working in snow cats to rid the upper Park of the white plague. Don't take this the wrong way, I wish for snow all the time. In the fall I wish it would snow every day and in the spring I wish it would just go away. This year we have a bit of a challenge with a big natural snow year on top of the monster snowmaking that ensured the Olympic race runs would hold up regardless of the weather. The result is going to be a few snow banks to ride around when we finally get the trails open up there.
